Editorial Ta Nea: The return of Mega Channel
Mega annoyed because it was loved not by citizens who wanted to be informed about what was going on in Greece and the world, to hear differing views and formulate an opinion.
As of today the television network that over three decades was associated with news reporting and was shut down for nearly a year-and-a- half – Mega Channel – is once again broadcasting nationwide.
The network over the years broadcast talk shows as well as dramatic and comedic series that were distinguished by their aesthetic refinement and quality.
It would be inconceivable for such a network to remain shut in perpetuity.
As it turned out Mega was too big to die.
Much has been said about the reasons for the closure of a network which made television history and left its mark on contemporary Greek culture.
What is certain is that it did not merely fall victim to the economic crisis.
Mega was annoying to some because its voice was authoritative and thus powerful.
It annoyed because it was loved not only by its regular television audience but also by citizens who wanted to be informed about what was going on in Greece and the world, to hear differing views and formulate an opinion.
From that perspective the return of Mega to television sets nationwide was a debt that had to be paid and that was done in order for the channel that was associated with the birth of private television in Greece, in 1989, to write a new chapter in Greek television history.
Mega was too big to die and because it remains very big it will once again win the trust of the public.
