Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) announced the possibility of scheduled power outages on Thursday afternoon in parts of the greater Athens area, as a rekindled wildfire north of the Greek capital is threatening high- and medium-voltage lines passing through the area.
Besides areas northeast of Athens, several islands of Cyclades connected with the mainland grid are also threatened. The massive wildfire first erupted on Tuesday at the forested Varibobi site before spreading to adjacent areas.
According to the transmission operator, the wildfire has knocked out two main lines (400kV and 150kV) supplying the Aghios Stefanos substation.
An ADMIE statement laconically noted that the graveness of the situation depends on the direction that the wildfire will take.
