A massive and multi-front wildfire ranging northwest and north of Athens proper on Friday veered dangerously towards the municipality of Aghios Stefanos, itself located east of the main north-south highway connecting the Greek capital with the rest of the mainland.

The wildfire has “jumped” from west to east over the multi-lane highway overnight, and was also threatening a handful of other north Attica prefecture communities.

With now gusty winds blowing in the area, the wildfire was taking a southeasterly direction on Friday afternoon, headed for the settlement of Stamata.
Residents throughout the wider region have been ordered to evacuate to safe areas.
