Athens Authentic Marathon 2021 – Kostas Gelaouzos broke the record of the last 17 years – Papoulias and Marinakou the winners of the 5 km race

The Greek champion, Kostas Gelaouzos, is the athlete who finished first in the 38th Athens Authentic Marathon, amid great applause at the Panathinaic Stadium.

The athlete broke the tape 2:16:49 after the beginning of the marathon, an individual record, in the original Athens Marathon course, while he also broke the record that was held by Nikos Polias (2: 17.56) during the Olympic Games in 2004.

Panagiotis Bourikas finished in the second place, at 2:22:33.

Kostas Gelaouzos, who was born in Amfissa, on November 21, 1990, with the time he achieved in the International Marathon of Valencia, on December 6, 2020, 2:14:44, became the 6th of all time in Greece.

Papoulias and Marinakou were the first ones to break the tape at 5 km

Christos Papoulias and Anastasia Marinakou were the winners of the 5 km race, the second in the context of the events of the 38th Athens Authentic Marathon.

Christos Papoulias finished at 14.45, followed by Dimitris Tsakalos (14.46) and George Tassis (14.57).

The women that followed Anastasia Marinakou (16.40) were Anthi Kyriakopoulou (17.11) and Maria Kassou (17.18). Both Christos Papoulias and Anastasia Marinakou set records in their races.

The big celebration

The big celebration of the Athens Authentic Marathon started on Saturday (13/11) with the opening ceremony at the Marathon Tomb and the Torch Relay. Then, the celebration continued with the 10 km race and, on Sunday morning, with the 5 km road race.

The start of the marathon was given by the mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, accompanied by the general secretary of SEGAS, George Giatroudakis, and the treasurer of SEGAS, Giannis Lioumbas.
