The value of Greek-owned ocean-going vessels has posted a significant increase over the past year, according to the latest figures released by shipping assessor VesselsValue.
Based on the assessment, Greek-owned shipping interests remained in third place, internationally, with the absolute value calculated at 145.88 billion USD at the end of October 2021. The same figure was 93.2 billion USD at the beginning of the year.
The fleet controlled by PR Chinese interests is in first place, valued at 191.25 billion USD, and followed in second place by Japanese owners, valued at 187.67 billion USD.
One reason behind the first-place showing of the Chinese fleet, a considerable portion of which are container ships, is the fact that the value of such vessels skyrocketed over the past year.
The Greek maritime fleet remains the international leader in terms of transport capacity, comprising 17 percent of the global total; 11.5 percent for Chinese-controlled shipping.
At the same time, Greek interests control the biggest, in value, fleet of tankers, assessed at 41.55 billion USD. The same is true of LNG carriers, with Greek interests controlling vessels valued at 19.11 billion USD, another first-place showing.
