The lack of infrastructure in 50 ports hinders the development of the cruise industry
More than 3 million passengers have traveled safely since last summer on cruises around the world
Greece was particularly distinguished in the cruise industry in 2021 as this year it had a presence in our country of 50% of the cruise ships that were active worldwide.
The above was mentioned by the president of Celestyal Cruises and the Association of Cruise Shipowners and Shipping Taxes (EEKFN) George Koumpenas speaking recently at the conference on: Greek Tourism, a national affair.
Speaking at the same day, the executive president of Thessaloniki Port Authority OLTH Mr. Athanasios Liagos said that OLTH shows strong dynamics in the cruise industry as against 17 cruise ship arrivals in 2021, 49 arrivals are planned for 2022 while 60% of them will be home ported in Thessaloniki.
He also noted that the occupancy of the 2021 cruises was of the order of 80%. Both speakers agreed on the need to improve infrastructure in order to enhance cruising and public-private partnerships.
According to Mr. Koubenas, cruise ships are now approaching 47-50 Greek ports, most of which are facing serious infrastructure shortages.
It should also be noted that according to data from the International Association of Cruise Companies (CLIA) worldwide, the resumption of cruise tourism in 2021 is gradual as from 16% of the CLIA fleet operating in June we reached 56% in September, while by 80% is expected to be operational by the end of the year.
More than 3 million passengers have traveled safely since last summer on cruises around the world, proving the effectiveness of the protocols.
