Dep. Min. of Infrastructure and Transport: Government plans for W. Attica in full swing

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, in charge of Infrastructure, Giorgos Karagiannis, answering a relevant question in Parliament spoke of all the projects that are being implemented or planned in West Attica and are expected to upgrade the daily life of the citizens.
Mr. Karagiannis stressed that for the first time in decades, transport projects are planned in Attica as the goal of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is to improve the lives of citizens.
He stressed that metro projects are complex and planning begins many years before the project. However, according to Mr. Karagiannis: “within 2.5 years this government put into operation the first 3 stations to Piraeus and will deliver the other 3 in the summer, while at the same time began the construction of 15 stations of Line 4“.
Specifically for West Attica, he acknowledged that this is a very densely populated area noting that the government is determined to meet the needs of the residents of the area with major infrastructure projects.
“No room for clumsiness and clutter”
Analyzing the plan for West Attica, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure referred to the extension of Line 2 to Ilion municipality. As he made known, the elaboration of the necessary architectural and static studies, as well as the electromechanical systems is in progress.
In the first phase, the expansion will concern 3 stations: Palatiani, Ilion and Agios Nikolaos. Two of the three stations are located on Thivon Street, the first (Palatiani station) at a distance of about 1,300 m north of Anthoupolis station and the second (Ilion station) 1,000 m north of the first. The third station (Agios Nikolaos) is located on Agiou Nikolaou Street in Ilion.
By the end of 2022, both the required technical studies and the environmental permit process of the project will be completed, so that the construction bidding can begin. According to the deputy minister, the construction time of the extension of line 2 in Ilion is 5 years.
“We are talking about a project of 350 million euros, there is no room for sloppiness and waste,” said Mr. Karagiannis.
The project plan for West Attica
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has proceeded with the preparation of an important project plan for West Attica.
The initial studies for the extension of Line 4 to St. Petersburg have already begun, with 3 of the 6 stations in Western Attica: Agioi Anargyroi, Ilion and Petroupolis.
In addition, in the immediate future, the auction of the Suburban Railway of West Attica will proceed.
“This is a project worth 100 million euros that will serve Elefsina, Aspropyrgos, Megara and several other municipalities in the area,” according to Mr. Karagiannis.
The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure made special mention of the project of the Connection of the Western Regional Avenue of Egaleo with the National Road (EO) Athens – Corinth and the completion of the Scaramanga Junction.
“We are also proceeding with a road project that the area has been asking for for years and that was not progressing. A project that has remained unfinished and unfinished for twenty years, since 2002 “, he stated characteristically.
