US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke by phone with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias on Sunday afternoon, as Washington continued to gauge what substantive measures NATO and its allies will take in the face of the shocking Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In a later Tweet on his official account, Blinken underlined that “Greece remains a vital NATO Ally and supporter of Ukrainian sovereignty”.
Both sides also reportedly agreed over what they’ve called an unprovoked, pre-planned and unjustified Russian invasion.
According to sources in Athens, Blinken also conveyed Washington’s condolences over the deaths of ethnic Greek civilians in the Mariupol area village of Sartana, casualties attributed by most sources to Russian air raids.
The entire Tweet by Blinken was “…I spoke today with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias about our efforts to support Ukraine in resisting Russia’s unbridled aggression. Greece remains a vital NATO Ally and supporter of Ukrainian sovereignty.”
