Greece – Egypt telecom interconnection agreement inked
Greece and Egypt are expanding collaboration in the field of telecommunications
The agreement for the new interconnection of Greece and Egypt through a submarine telecommunication cable branch was signed yesterday in Cairo by the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) and Telecom Egypt, Egypt’s leading telecommunications company. The cable is currently being laid in the Southeastern Mediterranean, with a landing point in Crete,
The cable project launched between Greece and Egypt will serve the growing volume of data in the Mediterranean region, with the creation of a new and reliable telecommunications corridor. The new cable will provide the fastest possible route to the Balkans and other major destinations in southwestern Europe such as Genoa and Marseille, via hybrid terrestrial and submarine telecommunications networks.
As pointed out by IPTO, yesterday’s agreement confirms the good cooperation between IPTO and its subsidiary Grid Telecom with Telecom Egypt, and follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of strategic importance signed in February 2022 at its headquarters IPTO in Athens, laying the foundations for exploring alternative connectivity options between the two countries.
