Athens Railway Station in second phase of renovation

An important railway project for Athens is entering the final stage of implementation, as part of the modernization and upgrading of the country’s main railway network, as the contract for the second phase of the development of the Athens Railway Station, a.k.a. Larissa Station, was signed yesterday.

The project will complete the renovation of the capital’s central railway station, Larissa Station, connecting it to the metro network.

The second phase of development of the Athens railway station, with a budget of 42.1 million euros (including VAT), will be completed within a three-year period. The project concerns the readjustment of tracks, the reconstruction of other functional elements (docks, pedestrian crossings, etc.), the installation of electrification and the parallel construction of the necessary infrastructure (foundations) for the building projects that will be completed in the future.

The contractor of the project is the INTRAKAT – RAILWAY PROJECTS – ATHENS STATION consortium with the distinctive title Athens Station Consortium. The financing of the project has been secured by European funds, from the NSRF 2014-2020, within the Operational Program “Transport Infrastructure, Environment and Sustainable Development”.

The project

Specifically, the project concerns:

-Complete construction of new platforms No. 1, 2 & 3 (for new lines No. 1 to No. 6) along with temporary shelters and electric/mechanical works that make the docks functional.

-Construction of the infrastructure of lines 1 to 6.

-Installation of electrification on lines 1 to 6.

– Completion of the construction of the station’s Underground Passage including stairs, elevators and the station’s connection with Attiko Metro S.A.

-Removal of the old underground pedestrian crossing and completion of the construction of the new small Underpass.

-Construction of three metal Overpasses within the station’s boundaries.

-Completion of the uneven junction of Pelopos street at the entrance of the station.

– Completion of the construction of the Lower Vehicular and Pedestrian Crossing of Domokou Street at the exit of the station.

-Construction of the station’s remaining electro-mechanical installations (electrical lighting, elevators, pumping stations).

-Reformation of the traffic network in the wider area with the construction of road works, hydraulic works, restoration of facilities and buildings, green works and fencing of the railway station, which are absolutely necessary to ensure the functionality of the existing railway corridor.
