Decrease in construction permits by 0.4% in May

Construction activity moved downward in May 2022.

According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority-ELSTAT, the Total Building Activity (private-public) in Greece, in May 2022 which is calculated on the basis of the number of issued building permits, amounted to 2,220. This figure corresponds to 459,866 m2 of surface and 2,206,868 m3 of volume, reflecting, respectively, a 0.4% decrease in the number of building permits, a 23.2% decrease in surface and 8.8% decrease in volume, compared with the corresponding month of 2021.

The building permits for the Private Building Activity issued in Greece in May 2022 amounted to 2,197. This figure corresponds to 426,732 m2 of surface and 2,033,480 m3 of volume. In comparison with the same month of 2021 there is a 0.6% decrease in the number of building permits, a 28.3% decrease in surface and a 15.5% decrease in volume.

The building permits for the Public Building Activity issued in Greece in May 2022 amounted to 23. This figure corresponds to 33,134 m2 of surface and 173,388 m3 of volume. Public Building Activity accounted for a 7.9% of the total building volume in May 2022.

The last 12 months

In the last twelve months, from June 2021 until May 2022, Total Building Activity (private-public) in Greece, calculated on the basis of the number of issued building permits, amounted to 24,055. This figure corresponds to 5,864,306 m2 of surface and 25,775,907 m3 of volume. In comparison with the corresponding period from June 2020 until May 2021, there is a 10.8% increase in the number of building permits, a 17.4% increase in surface and a 23.0% increase in volume.

In the same period, from June 2021 until May 2022, Private Building Activity in Greece recorded an 11.0% increase in the number of issued building permits, an 18.5% increase in surface and a 25.2% increase in volume, compared with the corresponding period from June 2020 to May 2021 (Table 4). During the same period, Public Building Activity accounted for an 1.6% of the total building volume.

During the period January – May 2022, Total Building Activity (private-public) in Greece recorded a 0.9% increase in the number of issued building permits, an 8.6% decrease in surface and an 1.6% increase in volume, compared with the corresponding period of 2021 (Table 5). During the same period, January – May 2022, Private Building Activity in Greece recorded an 1.0% increase in the number of issued building permits, an 8.7% decrease in surface and a 3.0% increase in volume, in comparison with the period of January – May 2021.
