Greek PM Mitsotakis: We expect agreement at EU Council on issue of natgas prices
Mitsotakis spoke as he arrived in Brussels for the meeting, held some two weeks after an informal European Council session in Prague
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday pointed to the significance of the same-day opening of a European Council meeting, with now surging inflation in Europe topping the agenda – fueled by an energy crisis caused, in large part, by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Mitsotakis spoke as he arrived in Brussels for the meeting, held some two weeks after an informal European Council session in Prague.
The European Council is expected to discuss the situation n war-battered Ukraine, the energy crisis, Europe’s economy and external relations.
Mitsotakis added that EU leaders have “reached a point where we have a package of proposals from the European Commission, which move in the right direction … even the most reluctant of European Council members” will be convinced to move in this direction.
The most prominent proposal eyes a cap on natural gas prices at the Title Transfer Facility (TTF) level.
“I believe the European Commission has thoroughly considered its proposals, and I would expect there will be an agreement by the end of the summit, so we can authorize the European Commission to proceed with these proposals,” he concluded.
