Household basket amendment submitted to Hellenic Parliament
Basket also updated on online supermarkets
The amendment on the “household basket” was submitted to the Parliament and will come to a vote on Thursday.
Provisions
According to the amendment, at regular intervals food and other supermarkets and other businesses that carry out retail activities and whose total annual turnover exceeds 90 million euros will send to the Ministry of Development and Investments a list of products that are necessary in order for citizens to a decent standard of living.
In particular, retailers must include at least one (1) product from each product category included in the household basket and have an affordable price, especially compared to other products of the same category, informing consumers, who come to their physical or online stores, as to the composition of the household basket they propose.
This information is provided by any appropriate means, in particular lists, brochures and special markings on the products in their sales area.
The list of products participating in the “household basket” and their prices are set freely by the companies, in compliance with article 58 of Law 4818/2021 (A’ 124), on unfair profiteering. The products included in the “household basket” are checked, as a matter of priority, by the competent control authorities for compliance with the above provision. The products on the list can be varied each time the list is sent by the retailers to the Ministry of Development and Investments.
