Tourism records even in Greece’s northernmost corner of Evros

Deputy tourism Minister Sofia Zaharaki expressed her satisfaction with the records in tourism both at the prefecture level and in Alexandroupolis itself, as well as in Samothraki and Thassos, while she also referred to the investment interest that Alexandroupolis is gathering, which – as she said – should be returned to the citizens through the improving of infrastructure.

All this, she noted, is also connected with the development law, with new investments with an emphasis on digitization and the “green” energy footprint of buildings, with the new 100 million euro program which is in pre-publication for the energy upgrade of tourist businesses, but also the subsequent programs linked to the Recovery Fund. The ninistry is also waiting for the program of the Ministry of the Environment for hiking paths, which will be addressed to Local Governments, as well as the new programs from the Ministry of Tourism for the marinas, accessible beaches, diving parks, thermal springs, the digitization of services and gastronomy.

The deputy minister explained that many of the above also concern Alexandroupolis, which the ministry sees as a short-stay and City Break destination, but also as habitation for digital nomads who want to work from here.

Extension of the tourist season

Regarding the extension of the tourist season, Mrs. Zaharaki characterized the first data as encouraging, clarifying that this is a multi-year effort, the results of which will be seen over the years.

As far as it is concerned, local pundits spoke of shortages in the hospitality sector. Efforts are already being made to cover these needs, noted Ms. Zaharaki, underlining that the government also emphasizes the strict observance of labor legislation.
