More than 780,000 taxpayers in Greece were added, in May 2023, to the list of individuals or businesses who owe at least one euro to the country’s tax bureau, compared to the same figure in April 2023.
Specifically, more than 4.471 million tax numbers now owe at least a nominal sum to the tax bureau.
Moreover, new arrears to the tax bureau in the first five months of 2023 increased by 2.8 billion euros, while unpaid tax obligations in the same period reached 2.44 billion euros.
Total arrears to the Greek tax bureau (AADE) now reach almost 105 billion euros, of which 26.28 billion euros have already been declared as uncollectible. However, even of the remaining 78.57 billion euros, a significant portion is owed by enterprises no longer in business or bankrupt, and by individuals no longer economically active or even alive.
Collection measures, via court orders, have been imposed on more than 1.44 million taxpayers in the country of roughly 11 million residents.
