Greek citizens’ protection minister Notis Mitarachi tendered his resignation on Friday, citing “personal reasons.”
His resignation was immediately accepted by PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who announced that current deputy sports minister Yannis Economou would assume the post, essentially the public order portfolio.
Greece has been plagued with hundreds of wildfires over the past 10 days, with a handful of blazes being particularly devastating. Five fire-related fatalities have also been recorded.
Economou’s post will be filled by former labor minister Yannis Vroutsis.
