Underestimating Turkey by viewing its actions merely as an electoral campaign ploy ignores Ankara’s expansionist “Blue Motherland” doctrine and can harm our country.
It has been apparent for some time now that the 'new sultan' of Ankara, in his effort to divert the attention of Turkish citizens from the continually worsening economic situation, has adopted a two-pronged approach to foreign policy.
Even if the Turkish foreign minister disputes the sovereignty of “militarised” Greek Aegean islands, and his Greek counterpart describes the Turkish government’s stance as the “epitome of irrationality, bilateral exploratory talks continue.
We must work to create a world in which no human being is forced to leave his or her home. Until then we must remember that seeking asylum is not a lawless act. It is a right.
There must be swift moves to alleviate the burden on the islands which are hosting all the migrants and to construct facilities that will provide the necessary living social services.
