Energy costs have doubled and in some cases tripled for households and businesses since a year ago and the situation has literally battered a very large percentage of middle class Greek households.
The government's increase of the energy subsidy, including natural gas, is an immediate and correct measures, as is the change in income criteria for the eligibility of economically vulnerable groups, and subsidising energy bills with various discounts.
State organisations, services, and elected officials were passing the buck between them by exploiting the diachronic dysfunction of overlapping jurisdictions.
Greece is expected to receive substantial funding from the EU's “Just Transition Mechanism”, which was set up to boost EU member states' green transition away from fossil fuels.
Mitsotakis noted that the situation inherited by his government in the economy was is not rosy but that it will be possible to implement its policies due to an over-performance in revenues during the last two months.
'We want to save the company. If PPC collapses then the country collapses and I want that to be understood both domestically and in Brussels,' the energy minister declared.
What is needed is a comprehensive PPC salvation plan that can avert even the slightest possibility of collapse.
